Speaker biographies
David Stout, Primary Care Trust Network Director, NHS Confederation
David took up post as the first Primary Care Trust Network Director at the NHS Confederation in February 2007. The PCT Network provides an independent voice for PCTs across the country and has over 90% of PCTs in membership. As PCT Network Director, David has been influential in the development of health policy, working closely with the Department of Health and others to ensure that the PCT perspective is understood. He also speaks regularly on PCT issues in the media. David also leads for the NHS Confederation on commissioning policy. Previously David had been Chief Executive of Newham Primary Care Trust from 2001 to 2007. Newham is a deprived borough in east London. The PCT won a number of national awards for service innovation and reducing health inequalities. David joined the NHS as a management trainee in 1984. Prior to joining Newham PCT he was the Director of Mental Health & Learning Disabilities Services and Deputy Chief Executive at Camden & Islington Community Health Services NHS Trust.
Dr Alan Cohen FRCGP, Director of Primary Care, West London Mental Health Trust; National Advisor to the IAPT programme
Dr Alan Cohen was a GP principal for 20 years in Mitcham, South London. In that time the practice developed from a three-partner practice with 6,000 patients to a five-partner training and teaching practice with 10,000 patients. From 2005 he was senior primary care advisor to CSIP (Care Services Improvement Partnership), a Department of Health programme responsible for service improvement and policy development in the areas of health and social care. He is now the National Primary Care Director of the Improving Access to Psychological Therapies programme, and Honorary Associate Director of Primary Care at the Department of Health. Dr Cohen was a Senior Fellow at the Sainsbury Centre for Mental Health, a national mental health charitable trust, for 13 years up until Nov 2009. He chaired the London Development Centre for Mental Health, one of eight regional development centres of the National Institute of Mental Health in England (NIMHE), until 2006. Dr Cohen now works as Director of Primary Care at the West London Mental Health Trust, whilst continuing his work as National Advisor to the IAPT programme.
Professor Azeem Majeed, Head of Primary Care & Public Health, Imperial College and Co-director, NIHR CLAHRC for Northwest London
Azeem Majeed is Professor of Primary Care and Head of the Department of Primary Care & Public Health at Imperial College London. Azeem is Co- Director of the NW London CLAHRC, with responsibility for chronic disease and primary care work programmes. Azeem is an experienced health services researcher and has published over 200 articles in peer reviewed journals. He has specialist accreditation in both general practice and public health. He remains active in clinical practice as a primary care physician, as well as working as a specialist in public health. His research interests are in chronic disease management in primary care; and the use of new technology and health informatics to improve the quality of health care.
Ben Richardson, Partner, McKinsey and Company
Ben Richardson is a Partner in McKinsey & Company's Healthcare Practice in London. He leads McKinsey's work in primary and community care in the UK and across EMEA. Over the last three years, he has supported the design and implementation of new provider models with the governance, information and incentives needed to deliver integrated care. He supports McKinsey's network of leading players in integrated care from around the world to identify and share best practice. He has also improved performance and productivity in primary and community care by about 20% within a single year. Ben has published several articles on the link between clinical leadership, management practices and outcomes. He holds a Master in Public Policy from Harvard and a B.A. from Princeton.
Professor Derek Bell, Director, NIHR CLAHRC for Northwest London
Derek was appointed as the first Professor of Acute Medicine in the UK as part of Imperial College London and as the inaugural President of the Society for Acute Medicine. Additionally he has been involved in developing Acute Medicine as a sub-specialty, this includes developing the competency based training programme and establishing a multi-professional and integrated research portfolio in Acute Medicine. Following graduation from Edinburgh University in 1980, he was a Lecturer in the Department of Medicine and obtained his MD on the inflammatory response to myocardial infarction. Derek initially specialised in Chest and General Medicine with an interest in Intensive Care and was appointed as Consultant, Central Middlesex Hospital, London before moving to Edinburgh as a Consultant in Acute Medicine and Chest Medicine. Derek was Associate Medical Director for Lothian Acute Hospitals prior to taking up a post at Imperial College. His academic research interests relate to quality and organisation of care, particularly acute medical care, and in the methods of delivery of care. Clinically his interests are illness severity assessment, pulmonary embolism and pneumonia.
Ganesh Sathyamoorthy, Head of Operations and Delivery, NIHR CLAHRC for Northwest London
Ganesh is responsible for the strategic development, operational delivery and governance of the programme. He leads the core team whilst maintaining effective partnership working across all key stakeholders. Ganesh has a Masters in the Management of Community Care and built the SDO Network, based at the NHS Confederation, from an outline bid to a fully functioning network.
The CLAHRC for Northwest London is well placed to provide support and opportunities for the GP consortia through our work in implementation, improvement research and collaborative working.
